LOCATION

The Alba county is situated in the central part of Romania, on the medium course of the Mures river, in its confluence area with Tarnave, Ampoi and Sebes rivers, including the south-eastern part of the Apuseni mountains.

The Alba county superposes over three major relief units of our contry: the Western Carpations (the Apuseni mountains), the Central Carpations (the Sebes mountains) and the Transilvanian table-land. The Sebes  mountains occupy the south part of the counyy, the Apuseni mountains  - the north-western part, the Metaliferi mountains enter the Alba district only with their eastern end, while the Trascau mountains are orientated on the south-west-north-east direction, under the shape of parallel peaks. Among the karst phenomena in the respective area, there are wonderful gorges cut by waters that cross the Jurassic limestone barrier of Trascau: the Aiud gorges, Monastery gorges, Ramet gorges.

Concerning the flora and fauna of these regions, the most meaningful is the alpine massif Surianu, where the chamois, the only mountain antelope in Europe, lives. Becoming extinct in the rest of the continent, the chamois can be found in isolated places, mostly on the peaks.

The afforested area has a rich and varied fauna, starting from tiny animals up to big mammals, including here almost all species of major economical and hunter’s interest.

Crossed by many water courses, with a varied relief and extensive forests, the Alba county has been, since the earliest times, an extremely favorable territory for the appearance and development of human communities.

The residence city of this district is the municipality of Alba Iulia, situated in the western part of the rivers’ Ampoi and Mures confluence.

The prosperity and development of this city are also due to a favorable geographical position, at the interpenetration of the Transilvanian table-land and the Apuseni mountains.

With a population of 73.239 inhabitants (in 1995), the city of Alba Iulia is an economical centre in a permanent development, with varied industrial companies: porcelain, bakery and others.

Witness to many events, some of  great importance for the national being, the Alba Iulia municipality possesses historical and architectural monuments, touristic objectives of unmeasured artistic value and deep patriotic meanings. The ‘Bulwark citadel’, built between 1715 and 1738 on the place of the old roman fort, is the most important touristic objective, having a 80 ha surface and a 12 km perimeter. Also, its walls shelter inside the majority of the historical monument in this town.

Through the beauty of the natural landscape, through the conservation of the environment and last, but not least, through its extremely important historical meanings, the Alba county is an area of great touristic and economical interest.
